June 11 Le Balme De Grottes to Belley

PAUL

Our first night camping was punctuated by rain for a while.. Didn't stop us going back to sleep. The toilet was interesting, squat over the hole. I'm glad I had got over my case of the runs.

After leaving the campsite we rode 10 km for breakfast. Walked int a Boulanger and walked out with Poulet and  Roquefort baguette. Is said to Lachlan I think it might be blue vien!! I also bought 10 French doughnuts which are choux pastry with sugar chunks on them. Which was a good purchase as  there was nowhere to buy food for 70 km today.

I found today's ride tough! 34*C today but I did find some respite when I stuck my head in a cold creek. Over 6 bottles of water consumed.  When we arrived at Belley the first shop to have a drink at was stopped at. After ten minutes there we went around the corner and order three half baguettes. The best sangas going! We did another 70 km today. I am surprised that there are no accommodation in the small towns, so we have to go a little further than expected. We head east tomorrow towards Annecy. We are not sure if we will make it though, so we might end up between.

It is great to ride past building that are so old. Many of the timbers are 300*300 square and 10m long. We saw disused roman bath houses along the road, and I realised why so many towns have the water fountain, it was for when houses did not have water in them, "meet you at the water fountain!!".

We saw a couple of the fountain troughs had fish in them, some trout upto 30cm long. Lachy got a video.. We are staying in aB&B tonight. The base floor is 300 yrs old but upstairs only ten..
Pizza and pasta for dinner tonight breakfast at 8am.

Hope you are enjoying work ;) love to you all.

LACHLAN

We rode a fair way today, over 70km! Dad and I are having a great time together and are making conversation out of almost anything we see. It is very interesting to see the different culture and the different ways people communicate. In Australia there is a real lack of community and we also lack patience. While in Belley, we saw a man stop in the middle of a one lane road to shake a friends hand and not one person tooted there horn. It would be lovely to see this back home.

I am going to wrap it up with talking to a lovely whelsh couple who had been to France many times and were teaching us the things to say to drivers if they cut us off.
Overall the trip has been very nice and relaxing and I am looking forward to what is to come.
